Bondì Ghibinet in Livigno
As every year, Livigno is preparing to celebrate Bondì Ghibinet in 2026, the ancient Epiphany tradition that combines folklore, local history, and community spirit.
The phrase “Bondì Ghibinet!”, uttered on January 6, is a festive greeting that the children of Livigno repeat as they travel through the streets of the village with sleds and baskets, knocking on doors in search of sweets and small gifts. This custom symbolizes the arrival of the Three Kings and the value of sharing, transforming the village into a place of encounter, joy, and solidarity.
The origin of the term Ghibinet is not entirely certain, but according to scholars it could derive from the German Gaben-Nacht (“Night of Gifts”) or from Gib mir etwas (“Give me something”), two interpretations that well describe the simple and joyful spirit of this tradition.
Il MUS!: custode della memoria di Bondì Ghibinet
It is precisely at MUS! Museo di Livigno e Trepalle that Bondì Ghibinet is recounted and celebrated. Housed in an ancient historic building, the museum preserves evidence of everyday life in times gone by, helping visitors to understand how this tradition came about and how it has been handed down from generation to generation.
Through everyday objects, tools, reconstructed environments, and stories of Alpine culture, the MUS! museum shows the link between Bondì Ghibinet and the life of the local community, restoring the authentic meaning of a ritual that still unites young and old today.
Living this tradition today
For us at Mota Hospitality, Bondì Ghibinet is also a special day, filled with memories, smiles, and traditions that are renewed every year. We look forward to celebrating it with you in the heart of Livigno.
