Bondì Ghibinet: a timeless tradition in Livigno
In Livigno, one of the most cherished traditions is Bondì Ghibinet, an ancient custom marking the end of the festive season. This tradition turns Epiphany into a community-wide celebration, with a special focus on children.
On January 6, children in Livigno roam the streets with sleds and baskets, knocking on doors to collect treats and gifts. Much like Halloween’s “trick or treat,” they say “Bondì Ghibinet!” and are rewarded with sweets, nuts, tangerines, or even special presents from relatives.
What does "Bondì Ghibinet" mean?
The origin of the word Ghibinet remains unclear, though experts suggest German roots: Gaben-Nacht (Gift Night) or Gib mir etwas (Give me something).
This tradition reflects the solidarity and shared warmth of Livigno's mountain communities, fostering unity and hope for the new year.
